A Classic Recipe

The Alaska

Named after the state is the Alaska Cocktail, a crisp and herbal blend featuring gin, yellow Chartreuse, and orange bitters. First appearing in print back in 1913, it remains a beloved, spirit-forward favorite for martini lovers.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin (London Dry or traditional Old Tom gin)
  • 1/2 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • Lemon twist (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. 1

Combine: Add the gin, Yellow Chartreuse, and orange bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice.

  2. 2

Stir: Stir the mixture well until it is completely cold and properly chilled (about 20 to 30 seconds).

  3. 3

Serve: Strain the liquid into a pre-chilled coupe or Nick & Nora cocktail glass.

  4. 4

Garnish: Express the essential oils from the lemon twist over the top of the drink, then drop the twist into the glass.

Ingredients & Ratios

  • Bottom layer: 1/2 oz Kahlúa (coffee liqueur)
  • Middle layer: 1/2 oz Bailey's Irish Cream
  • Top layer: 1/2 oz Whiskey, traditionally Crown Royal Canadian whisky

How To Layer The Shot

  1. 1

Pour: Pour the Kahlúa directly into the bottom of a clear shot glass.

  2. 2

Position: Hold a bar spoon upside down just touching the inside edge of the glass right above the Kahlúa.

  3. 3

Float: Slowly pour the Bailey's Irish Cream over the back of the spoon to float it as the middle layer.

  4. 4

Repeat: Repeat the spoon-pouring technique with the whiskey to create the final top layer.

A Legendary Alaskan Shooter

The Duck Fart

We know. This famous (now a tourist bucket-list item), three-layered Alaskan shooter is made with equal parts Kahlúa, Bailey's Irish Cream, and Crown Royal whiskey. It was invented in December 1987 by bartender Dave Schmidt at the Peanut Farm bar in Anchorage, after an elderly customer burped loudly trying the mix.
